‘Botox’ and BOTOX®

Not all ‘botox’ is BOTOX®. Confused? It is hardly surprising as the two terms are used interchangeably all the time. Many companies produce their own version of botulinum toxin, each of which has a slightly different action and effect, but only toxin produced by Allergan Pharmaceutical Company can be termed BOTOX®.  We only use genuine BOTOX® for our wrinkle-reducing procedures. It is licensed and regulated by the UK Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency. Cheaper providers may be advertising ‘botox’ which is actually a cheaper alternative version, which is not interchangeable with genuine BOTOX®- it is always worth checking whether your ‘botox’ is the real deal. BOTOX® is a prescription only medicine, so is only available to appropriately qualified health professionals.

How does it work?

Our face is made up of many muscle systems, which often work against each other. An example of this is on the forehead, where often the muscles causing a frown will dominate those which raise our eyebrows, causing wrinkles across the forehead. Botulinum toxin injections are target to partially paralyse selected muscles, to switch which system dominates. In our forehead example, reducing the dominance of the frown muscles, allows the raising muscles to take over and pull out the creases in the forehead. The injections do not paralyse the muscles completely, allowing a natural look. The effect lasts between 3 and 4 months, although there may be some lasting wrinkle reduction as we learn different habits over the 3-4 months, such as not frowning as much and generating the wrinkles.
